The Exhibition

base2aThe Base Sous-Marin now serves as a regular exhibition centre and is currently hosting a new exhibition ‘La Probabilité du Miracle’ by Gérard Rancinan and Caroline Gaudriault who take you on a unique journey combining art and culture, where reality merges with the unreal, where the words are mixed with the memory of the photograph and where the thought of Man is infinite.

The exhibition that mixes photographs, words, sounds, art-videos, an art movie, and art installations ‘that will not leave you unscathed‘.

Gérard Rancinan and Caroline Gaudriault offer a journey into an artistic universe where real and unreal confront each other.

1044271_1_1Their proposition asserts itself as the mirror of the memory of our society and its time. The dialogue established between Gérard Rancinan’s photography and the texts of Caroline Gaudriault is punctuated throughout the journey by some forty works transposing an epoch marked by fantasies, illusion, contradictions to the denial of reality and books.

They pose questions about our world and even more about the perception that we have.

Phil visited several years ago to see an impressive photographic exhibition, and was amazed how clever use of coloured lighting transformed the ‘satanic’ interior, reflecting off the surface of the flooded submarine pens. It is still eerie and a bizarre venue for an exhibition, but it works!


The Base Sous-Marin

From the outside the base is a massive, ugly, dirty concrete structure built by the Germans during the war. This gigantic bunker is organized in eleven pens or docks for submarines and protected by a massive bomb proof concrete roof. The complex covers an area of 43,000 m2 with 12,000 m2 open to the public and converted into an a cultural space managed by the city of Bordeaux.

Throughout the year, the Submarine Base hosts a multidisciplinary program: temporary exhibitions, concerts, opera, jazz, theatre performances and dance.

Lunch

peniche-bordeauxBistro Regent la Peniche, at Quai Armand Lalande, Bassins a Flot No1 offers a five choice menu at 12.90€. It is unusual that it is on a ship, which affords great views of the Bassin and Submarine Pens.

Free parking on the adjacent Quai amidst many white vans, the area is undergoing major redevelopment !

The ship/restaurant is about a 5 minute walk north west along Rue Lucien Faure from the Bassins á Flot Tram stop (line B). (second traffic lights). I propose meeting at 1pm.

Please note there are 2 ship restaurants, plus other adjacent vessels. After lunch it will be best to drive the 1.3km circuit of the Bassin to reach the Submarine Base, I think we will have enough cars to carry any coming by foot.

There is ample free parking, public transport is not so easy !

Join in the festive spirit and come along with us for a visit to Bordeaux’s Christmas market on Wednesday 7th December followed by dinner at “L’Entrecote” and enjoy one of their delicious steaks and, if you have room, an appetising dessert.

We hope that you will join us and have a wander around the Christmas market, packed with stalls full of interesting items and indulge in a little Christmas shopping or, maybe just to enjoy a glass or three of vin chaude and chat with friends!

Following our visit to the market we have arranged to eat dinner at the ever popular restaurant L‘Entrecote’ to enjoy a steak smothered in their famous secret sauce.

The price is 19 euros for steak, frites and salad. Desserts are 5,50 to 6 euros; house wine red or rose 16 euros per bottle and coffee is 1,60 euro. The steak here is very good and never disappoints.

The Christmas Market is situated in Allee Des Tourney (opposite the Grand Theatre) and we meet at 7pm by the children’s carousel ride situated at the entrance to the of market at the Opera end of Allee Des Tourney. followed by dinner at 8.30pm.

Bassin d’Arcachon Walk and Lunch : Le Teich - Saturday 19th November


delta_de_l_eyre_a_pied_bassin_d_arcachon_tourismeWe plan meeting at 10am for walk around the Chemin du Littoral, which skirts the Bird Sanctuary at le Teich.

A number of exotic birds should be seen as well as interesting scenery as the path winds around ponds and rivers, affording great views of the Bassin.

Having developed our appetites we shall retire for lunch at ‘The Bistrot Gourmand’ as we did on our previous walk here.


Directions

Take A63, then A660 and take exit 2 to Biganos, continue north over 2 roundabouts (the first is new!) and dip underneath the railway bridge, then turn left at the next roundabout on D650 and pass through le Teich.

Look for the ‘leaving Le Teich’ sign, and just past it there is a very minor road on the right, allée de Canteranne our destination. If you reach the ‘entering Gujan-Mestras’ sign, you have overshot the allée !

Drive several hundred meters up the allée, cross the railway line and look for our meeting/parking place on the right.

Curry Evening: Saturday 12th November - Soulac-sur-Mer


unspecifiedJohn and Chris E. are organising a curry evening in response to popular demand and also as a fund raiser for a junior school education project.

The school is situated in Varkala, Kerala on India’s south west coast and is managed by the local Temple.

The project is being undertaken by a voluntary organisation and depends on contributions and donations to supplement the limited financial support it receives from the State.

Chris and John have a close association with the school as they were befriended by the parents of four girls who are pupils there.

The profits from the curry evening will go to support the work of the school during the next academic year.

We are holding our second BBC technology workshop/discussion to help members get the best use from their computers, tablets and smartphones

  • The location is still to be decided but the workshop will start at 10:30 with a break for lunch and will continue into the afternoon for as long as attendees request (within reason!)
  • Please bring your lunch
  • Attendees will be limited to sixteen to enable the workshop to be enjoyable, fun and useful.

Grand Christmas Party and Dinner - Friday 2nd December 2016

xmas-partyThis year following Members preferences we are again returning to the stunning Château La Chèze in Floirac for our annual Christmas Party and Dinner.

The price for members is 45€, which is the same as last year. The price for member’s guests is 55€.

The evening commences at 7pm with a glass or two of kir petillant and canapes – an opportunity to meet up with friends and to welcome new members.  Followed by a 20 minute production by the drama group. This year’s theme is definitely not for the faint-hearted or those with a delicate constitution:

‘Snow White And Her (Not Short Dwarfs) 30 Years On – THE REUNION’

After everyone has recovered from the drama group petit piece, dinner will be a served buffet and will be prepared for us by the highly regarded reputable traiteur ‘DuLou’.

You must order your choice of main course in advance and on the night you will have a choice of one of the starters and one of the desserts. The dinner includes wine and water.

After dinner there will be dancing to a selection of oldies and goodies and some up to date music into the wee hours of the morning and will keep going until there is no one left to dance. All those memories will come flooding back! The energetic can enjoy a boogie; maybe a smooch or two for the romantically inclined and we may be sure that some of the old faithfuls (music that is!) will make an appearance.

Or if you’re not feeling energetic, just sit by the open fire and chat with friends. And the drink will not run out! (Not that we are drunkards or old soaks). So please don’t miss out come and join us!

Last year we all ran out of steam 04:00!

In summary, very much an evening to suit everyone.  To enjoy good food and wine. To be calm or to be energetic. The choice is yours. Oh ……. and also to enjoy great company in a beautiful environment!

Château La Chèze – 27 Avenue Pierre Semirot, 33270 FLOIRAC.

The château was built in the late 19th century on the grounds of a former small fortified castle by a wealthy market gardener. The art nouveau style mansion has been modernized to high standards whilst retaining many of the original charming features. The staff are helpful and friendly and create a great ambience for us to enjoy.

Photo Workshop : Gradignan : Tuesday 25th October

history-of-photography-antique-photographerAfter several months’ promotion as a potential event, and positive feedback, we are pleased to offer this means of improving your creative and technical skill in this fascinating, and rapidly changing field.

Hugh Dent is an experienced and enthusiastic photographer, who has offered to ‘show us the ropes ! Myriam has kindly offered her house (with tea and biscuits!) in Gradignan to host the workshop.

The detailed plan is currently being structured. Hugh’s introduction, ‘How to create great photos, composition, lighting, cameras and tools to help you, will form the major part of the morning session.

After lunch,- please bring a packed lunch ! We shall progress to hands on, organising, optimising and sharing your photos. Hence it would be most useful to bring your laptop PC or tablet, as well as camera with you. (Times, address and directions tba)
