Wine & Cheese Tasting: Château Carbonnieux : Saturday 15th October

24302-650x330-autre-chateau-carbonnieux-pessac-leognanWe have reserved 12 places at the Atelier de Vins & Fromages (Cheese & Wine pairing Workshop) at Château Carbonnieux, which we visited earlier this year. The atelier includes a visit to the cellars and is led by cheese expert Thiery Laffitte.

The visit starts at 10.30 and lasts approximately two hours. It is a beautiful Château as many of you know and they make wonderful wines, both red and white Grand Cru Classé de Graves. This should be of interest to wine and cheese lovers.

History

chateau-carbonnieux-Pessac-leognan-2009-etiquetteThe medieval origins of the estate were confirmed by a deed of exchange dated April 2, 1292 and signed by two monks from the powerful Sainte-Croix abbey in Bordeaux.

After the suffering of two World Wars, Bordeaux viticulture had reached its lowest ebb.

There was a terrible frost in the winter of 1956 and it was in this same year that Marc Perrin who had bought the estate, set to work on the renovation of the château and its vineyard. He first started a significant replanting campaign that took the estate to 45 hectares in 1970 then to 70 hectares in 1980, to reach almost 95 hectares today.

His son, Antony, built a new fermentation cellar and modernized the cellars to adapt to new vinification methods. He continued the restoration of the château and the vineyards and focused on increasing the renown of Carbonnieux and Bordeaux wines throughout the world.

Anthony was president of the “Union of Grands Crus de Bordeaux”, president of the “Crus Classés de Graves” as well as being one of the forerunners of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, created in 1987. He also purchased new estates in the appellation: Château Le Sartre and Bois Martin which today belong to his sister.

Over the years he passed on the family winemaking heritage and his skills to his children Eric, Christine and Philibert Perrin. Today the torch has been passed on to them and once again the estate has reached a peak.

Today, Château Carbonnieux benefits from the « sustainable agriculture » classification for all its vineyard practices. This type of practice means that chemical insecticides, weed-killers and acaricides are banned and replaced by environmentally friendly methods that better respect biodiversity and allow the vine plant to stimulate its own natural defences.

Bordeaux Riverside visit, walk and lunch: Tuesday 11th October

Moon about the Moon harbour and visit inside Pont de Pierre

pont pierreMeeting place and time: the Porte de Bourgogne tram stop on A or C line between 9.30 and 9.45.

At 10 and 11 a.m. two 1-hour visits of the oldest bridge in Bordeaux, the Pont de Pierre which looks solid but is in fact hollow, with a Bordeaux-Metropole guide for 2 groups of around 12 persons each.

The visits are free. The numbers of visitors are limited for safety reasons, make sure you book early.

The bridge was seen as a daring venture and graceful structure when built in 1816-21 and still stands proudly astride the river… or tries to. While one group goes in, Alain will take the other group across and around so that we can enjoy the views and the history of the harbour, then we swap at 11.

A gentle walk downstream (800m, 1⁄2 mile) will take us all along the oldest part of Bordeaux, the grand mid-18th century riverfront and Place de la Bourse to the corner of Place des Quinconces for lunch at La Belle Époque in the dining room of a former hotel graced by a picturesque décor of coloured Bordeaux tiles by Vieillard, the famed local potters.

Canoe excursion : Monday September 12th : Salles to Biganos Port

canoeingMany members may remember a canoe excursion three years ago, especially those who got wet !  We plan an all day trip, covering 20km from Salles to Biganos port, with a picnic half way at Mios.

Not so much paddling is required as the flow of the river, plus the ebb tide carries us most of the way, through lovely scenery and nature, especially birds.

There are a selection of photos from the previous trip in the October 2013 newsletter here

Arrival

We shall meet at the lovely small leisure port of Biganos at 9am (sorry about the early start !).  There we leave our cars and board a minibus which takes us to Salles.  After a safety and canoeing briefing there, and after packing our picnics in waterproof containers, we set off downstream to our riverside lunch rendez-vous in Mios.  There is the opportunity to opt out there if anyone has had enough !  We should be back at our cars by 5pm.

There are a selection of photos already in the October 2013 newsletter.

You may get wet !  Bring a change of clothes, be prepared with sun and insect protection. Shorts are advised, as well as old trainers or secure sandals. A retaining cord for your glasses is strongly advised.

Cricket - Sunday 21st August

CRICKET

Dear All,

I am calling all past and present member of Giscours cricket Club out of retirement next Sunday, 21st August for a friendly game against a fun loving touring side, who call themselves the “Mad Hatters”, but I believe are a group of cricket loving friends enjoying a holiday in the region with their families.

Since our “1st XI” will be busy in Damazan with the final four of the 20/20 competition, we desperately need ten more jovial souls to join me in almost white clothing to ensure that we can meet our obligation to the touring side. The ability to hold a bat and catch a ball is a definite advantage, but is not necessary, since an appreciation of beer, wine and sunshine are the most important qualities.  The Club’s reputation depends on it!

Since this is a friendly match, no “licence” is needed, so this is the ideal occasion for the “old pros” to get together and reminisce on old times. It would even be the ideal time for a family afternoon at Giscours.

Can you let me know by return whether you are a “yes”, “no” or “maybe”, or if you have any cricketers staying with you?!

Here’s hoping for a selection problem!

Kind regards, Rupert
