Lycée Lunch: Arcachon, Thursday 8th March at 11:50

lyceearcachonThe Lycee Condorcet in Arcachon is a school where young people aspiring to be chefs and restaurateurs, receive tuition in this field alongside their traditional education. The students cook and serve as part of their school curriculum.  The school has two dining options a restaurant and a brasserie. We have eaten here several times over the years and have always enjoyed delicious food, well cooked and well presented.

We have made a provisional reservation for 12:0 on Thursday 8th March at le Restaurant at Lycée Condorcet, 1 avenue Roland  Dorgelès, 33120 Arcachon. This is a school for 15 to 18 year olds who are learning the restaurant trade, and practicing on real life customers! The reservation is for a maximum of 20 guests, and Sarah must confirm numbers to them by Thursday 4th February.

As a guide, we previously paid 12€ for the menu and from 1€50 per glass of wine, which we feel represents excellent value for money.


After Lunch

After lunch we propose a walk in Arcachon, either along the promenade or around the Ville d’Hiver.

Directions

Directions, arriving from Bordeaux: follow the signs to Arcachon and you will arrive at a roundabout with a tall, pointed, metal structure.

Carry on towards Arcachon and at the FOLLOWING round about, take the 4th exit – last one before you come back on yourself, after the turn-off into the flats, marked ‘no through road’. (also marked for the Lycées if you look in the right place)!

At the top of this road, you need to go to the left, BUT will be fed round to the right – you have no choice. So, go right, do the loop at the end and come back on yourself, pass where you entered this whole strange place in the first place, go up the hill and park. .

The Lycée will be over on your right – you’ll see the flags, it’s the end building on that side of the road. I don’t recommend you use GPS, it will take you a different, unnecessarily complicated way.

Please arrive at 11h50, we can meet at the front gate of the school, and go into la Brasserie for 12h


Reminder: L'Atelier des Chefs - Cooking Workshop: Bordeaux - Thursday 26th October at 12:15

Involves a short introductory course by the chef, in french, of preparing and cooking one main course which will be a spicy Indian dish of Green Curried Prawns with Chinese Cabbage, Lime and Fresh Herbs.

A demonstration is given and all the techniques are explained by the chef.  After which you prepare and cook the dish and then eat it in the adjacent dining area. The ingredients are all provided and included in the 17€ fee which also includes a desert.

The workshop is at L’Atelier des Chefs which has eight establishments in major cities across France. Workshops are available for many different types of cooking and cater (excuse the pun!) for all levels of skill.

The price of the workshop is 17€ per person which covers a demonstration by the chef together with the ingredients to cook a main course.  You prepare and cook the main course and then you eat it !!

Nearby

Less than a 20 minute drive to Perpignan, former capital of the Kings of Majorca and the Counts of Roussillon. Perpignan changed hands repeatedly during the medieval period until it finally became French territory with the Treaty of the Pyrenees of 1659. Too far from the coast to become a port, the town developed into a cloth-making centre by the early middle ages. Perpignan’s Top 5 are:

  • Palais des Rois de Majorque. The number one sight in Perpignan has been the focus of the town’s success and growth over the centuries. Originally used as a king’s residence during the twelfth to fourteenth centuries, today it’s really only the gardens and the courtyard of this imposing citadel that are worth a visit.
  • Saint-Jean quarter. For an idea of Perpignan’s prosperous past take a wander through the network of narrow lanes in this district and take in the splendour of the fourteen and fifteenth century mansions and stately homes which make up this atmospheric part of the town.
  • Cathédrale Saint-Jean. Functioning as Perpignan’s cathedral since 1602, the exterior walls of this  imposing structure are particularly noteworthy: layers of stones from the local river bed have been squeezed in-between the brick.
  • Jardin de Sant-Vicens. These gardens on Rue Sant Vicens are not only full of exotic orange trees and Oleanders, but they’re also the place to look for ceramic pots and textiles which are on sale here.

Cooking Workshop : Chartrons / Bordeaux

On a beautiful late afternoon, eleven members met at ‘Cook & Go’ at Hangar 18 on Quai des Marques, not knowing what to expect from this Cooking workshop. Maybe we would be learning new ways to make “nibbles” to go with aperos!

Our first impression of this lovely small shop was great – very modern equipment such as knives, mandolins etc, together with very exciting salts, chutneys, pates and so on all for sale and this leading into a large open plan training area. We were met by our very charming tutor, a young french lady named Julie.

Donning our plastic aprons and being asked to wash our hands, we gathered around our work stations, where it was obvious we were going to be making a lot more than “nibbles”. Our first task was to make Salmon Tartare. Having given us a demonstration on how to cut into macedonia, salmon, red pepper, zucchini and shallots (I realised I had been cutting shallots incorrectly for 50 odd years!!!) silence fell, as working in pairs, we concentrated on cutting these tiny morsels and adding all the other ingredients, we eventually made the best tartare I had ever tasted! By now, we were all really happy to continue preparing Asian flavour broth with prawns, Samosa Basque -with a lesson on how to fill and fold the pastry – Chicken ballottine with spinach sauce and Mushroom Rissotto with Brian having volunteered to stir the Arborio rice for 20 mins! As you can see not just a little snack!

We were joined at the end of the session by three of our husbands and we all sat around our work station eating the fabulous meal we had all just prepared and in true BBC fashion, enjoying a glass or two!
