Burns Night at Cenon: Saturday 28th January 2017


burnsnightBurns’ Night, commemorating the great Scottish poet Robert Burns, is traditionally one of the BBC’s more popular events.

Many members will recall past Scottish celebrations in the splendid chateau home of two of our members in Cenon. We are delighted and most grateful that they have offered this venue again for 2017.

A maximum of 28 people can be accommodated for a sit-down dinner, so it will be a case of ‘first come first served’!

The price is 20€ per person which will include a traditional menu of smoked salmon, haggis, neeps and tatties, and trifles.  Coffee, wine and whisky will also be included in this price.  Entertainment will include some Burns’ recitation and of course, the traditional ‘Address to the Haggis’!

“It was a sell out! The full capacity of 28 members booked. Guests commenced the evening with a rather potent Scottish Sparkle, skilfully prepared and ladled out by John. There was a healthy display of tartan evident, together with knobbly knees displayed by the kilt wearing Scotsmen!”

“We were treated to animated singing led by Kit of ‘Comin’ thro’ the rye’ accompanied – as has become the custom at our Celtic events – by Jack, duly dressed in fine regalia. He then lead the magnificent procession, with several circuits, piping in the Haggis. The strident bagpipes were momentarily silenced when the key pipe came adrift, causing some amusement, but not detracting from the spectacle of Eileen proudly bearing the Haggis! Chris then treated us to an ‘Address to the Haggis’ before brutally stabbing it!”

”   …….. then to the serious part – eating the haggis and it was agreed by many to be the best ever ! It was of course accompanied by the traditional, neeps and tatties (mashed potatoes). Less obvious was that the excellent whisky, served to all, was to be partially poured on the haggis (like gravy).”

Grand Christmas Party and Dinner - Friday 2nd December 2016

xmas-partyThis year following Members preferences we are again returning to the stunning Château La Chèze in Floirac for our annual Christmas Party and Dinner.

The price for members is 45€, which is the same as last year. The price for member’s guests is 55€.

The evening commences at 7pm with a glass or two of kir petillant and canapes – an opportunity to meet up with friends and to welcome new members.  Followed by a 20 minute production by the drama group. This year’s theme is definitely not for the faint-hearted or those with a delicate constitution:

‘Snow White And Her (Not Short Dwarfs) 30 Years On – THE REUNION’

After everyone has recovered from the drama group petit piece, dinner will be a served buffet and will be prepared for us by the highly regarded reputable traiteur ‘DuLou’.

You must order your choice of main course in advance and on the night you will have a choice of one of the starters and one of the desserts. The dinner includes wine and water.

After dinner there will be dancing to a selection of oldies and goodies and some up to date music into the wee hours of the morning and will keep going until there is no one left to dance. All those memories will come flooding back! The energetic can enjoy a boogie; maybe a smooch or two for the romantically inclined and we may be sure that some of the old faithfuls (music that is!) will make an appearance.

Or if you’re not feeling energetic, just sit by the open fire and chat with friends. And the drink will not run out! (Not that we are drunkards or old soaks). So please don’t miss out come and join us!

Last year we all ran out of steam 04:00!

In summary, very much an evening to suit everyone.  To enjoy good food and wine. To be calm or to be energetic. The choice is yours. Oh ……. and also to enjoy great company in a beautiful environment!

Château La Chèze – 27 Avenue Pierre Semirot, 33270 FLOIRAC.

The château was built in the late 19th century on the grounds of a former small fortified castle by a wealthy market gardener. The art nouveau style mansion has been modernized to high standards whilst retaining many of the original charming features. The staff are helpful and friendly and create a great ambience for us to enjoy.

Wine and Cheese Festival : Langon - Saturday 27th August


affiche_2017This is a chance to taste wines, cheeses, various meats and music in a festive atmosphere.

Having paid your 2€ admission (7€ after 18:00), you will be given a glass which entitles you to a free glass of INAO wine, a taste of a wine in most stands and bread, meats and cheeses on the others.

INAO is the French organization charged with regulating French agricultural products with Protected Designations of Origin (PDOs). Controlled by the French government, it forms part of the Ministry of Agriculture.

There are workshops for children and adults, competitions, musical entertainment all day and at 21.30, you have the opportunity of watching a live show if you can manage to keep awake after all the wine intake!!


Lunch

Lunch can be bought at one of the several mobile restaurants on site. Choices range from seafood through to duck and steak and the quality has always been excellent. Equally, there are stands selling aperitifs if your hunger is not that great! If you fancy dinner, it is advisable to book at lunch time as this festival is very popular.

This year, the evening concert at 21:30 is given by Michael Jones, a Welsh-French rock and blues singer, guitarist and song writer who lives in France. He has made several hit albums and toured with Jean-Jacques Goldman, the American singer Carole Fredericks and even better Status Quo!

Saturday 23rd April – St Georges Day – Avensan

Come and join us for a St George’s day celebration to remind you of dragons in a far away land !  Lunch will be that most traditional of English foods – Fish et Chips!!

For those who are not so fishy, sausage and chicken nuggets will also be on the menu.  Includes Ale and Vino Collapso. Soft drinks as well of course.

Starting at 12.15, in Avensan which is near Castlenau in the Medoc.  A good idea to wear something for all weather although we will be under an abri.

Last year we had lots of fun and lots of laughs, with the odd recitation, patriotic singing etc. As numbers will be restricted to a maximum of 40 please reserve early to avoid disappointment particularly as this event is on a Saturday !

St. Patrick’s Day Celebration : Martignas : Saturday 19th March

Four Leaf CloverFollowing on from January’s Burns’ Night, Eileen and John have kindly offered their house in Martignas for our other Celtic celebration!

This will commence at 7.30, wear something green if you wish, and bring a plate of finger food to share – and a well tuned singing voice! Please also bring disposable plates and cutlery if needed !

An aperitif, wine and water will be provided but a charge of 5€ per head will be needed to cover costs.

Numbers will be limited to 30 – earliest booking is recommended !

burnsnightThe BBC will again be celebrating the work of the great Scottish poet Robert Burns in the traditional way. This year we are returning to the ‘vaulted wooden hall’ in Martingas that is the house of one of our members.

The formula, however, remains the same with a traditional menu of smoked salmon, haggis, neeps, tatties and trifles with wine and whisky at the inclusive price of 20€ per head.

Entertainment will include the pipes, some Burns’ recitation and the traditional ‘Address to the Haggis’.  Space limitations for a sit down dinner mean that only 28 people can be accommodated.

This event was overbooked last year so if you would like to join us please contact John or complete the online booking form as soon as possible.
