Nearby

Less than a 20 minute drive to Perpignan, former capital of the Kings of Majorca and the Counts of Roussillon. Perpignan changed hands repeatedly during the medieval period until it finally became French territory with the Treaty of the Pyrenees of 1659. Too far from the coast to become a port, the town developed into a cloth-making centre by the early middle ages. Perpignan’s Top 5 are:

  • Palais des Rois de Majorque. The number one sight in Perpignan has been the focus of the town’s success and growth over the centuries. Originally used as a king’s residence during the twelfth to fourteenth centuries, today it’s really only the gardens and the courtyard of this imposing citadel that are worth a visit.
  • Saint-Jean quarter. For an idea of Perpignan’s prosperous past take a wander through the network of narrow lanes in this district and take in the splendour of the fourteen and fifteenth century mansions and stately homes which make up this atmospheric part of the town.
  • Cathédrale Saint-Jean. Functioning as Perpignan’s cathedral since 1602, the exterior walls of this  imposing structure are particularly noteworthy: layers of stones from the local river bed have been squeezed in-between the brick.
  • Jardin de Sant-Vicens. These gardens on Rue Sant Vicens are not only full of exotic orange trees and Oleanders, but they’re also the place to look for ceramic pots and textiles which are on sale here.

Agenda
  • Arrive Monday 25th September and depart Friday 29th September (ie Four nights)
  • Seven rooms with private bathrooms are available (five double rooms and two suites)

Piet de Bie Memorial Walk - Wednesday 8th February

About 25 of us assembled for a ‘light’ breakfast in the woods near Soussans in the Medoc on the anniversary of Piet’s birthday. Later, we all enjoyed a good lunch together with many reminiscences and a toast to the memory of Piet.  Thanks to Elizabeth for the excellent organisation including the weather!

Suitably fortified from breakfast, we did manage to fit in a lovely walk in the sun along the forest tracks which included climbing over a large recently fallen tree and slip sliding down the steep sides of a very muddy ditch which caught out at least one of our group!

We all unanimously agreed to repeat the occasion next year as the second Annual Piet de Bie Memorial Walk

Canoe excursion : Monday September 12th : Salles to Biganos Port

canoeingMany members may remember a canoe excursion three years ago, especially those who got wet !  We plan an all day trip, covering 20km from Salles to Biganos port, with a picnic half way at Mios.

Not so much paddling is required as the flow of the river, plus the ebb tide carries us most of the way, through lovely scenery and nature, especially birds.

There are a selection of photos from the previous trip in the October 2013 newsletter here

Arrival

We shall meet at the lovely small leisure port of Biganos at 9am (sorry about the early start !).  There we leave our cars and board a minibus which takes us to Salles.  After a safety and canoeing briefing there, and after packing our picnics in waterproof containers, we set off downstream to our riverside lunch rendez-vous in Mios.  There is the opportunity to opt out there if anyone has had enough !  We should be back at our cars by 5pm.

There are a selection of photos already in the October 2013 newsletter.

You may get wet !  Bring a change of clothes, be prepared with sun and insect protection. Shorts are advised, as well as old trainers or secure sandals. A retaining cord for your glasses is strongly advised.

Seaplanes, Flying Display and Picnic - 12:00 noon on Sunday 22nd May : Biscarrosse

seaplanesbiscarosseBackground

Biscarrosse was the centre of the French seaplane industry, and in its heyday provided direct flights to New York !

After a break of four years, Biscarrosse is again hosting a major aviation event at the old seaplane base : ‘Flying Spirit’ featuring displays by around 30 classic aircraft, including the Rafale (the French competitor to the Eurofighter)

Free Entry

Entry is free this year.  For details of the event, please see the website here

Our Rendezvous and Picnic

We must expect it to be busy, and to avoid the crowds we propose meeting at 12.00 sharp for a ‘tranquil’ picnic at the Petit Lac.

We will then walk less than 1 Km along the canal to reach the event at the southern lake at Latecoere, which has the usual festival facilities (aviation and other stalls, refreshments etc).

Please bring all you need for a picnic ! Phil aims to ‘reserve’ the picnic tables by the lake !

A flavour from last year

This event is always very popular and to give you a flavour, this is what happened last year:

The day’s picnic was organized by Jenny. A very well attended event. Everyone brought a dish, which created a delicious spread that was shared alfresco. Plenty of liquid refreshments too. Tables swapped around to make life interesting. Desserts followed. Some of the recipes are attached, together with this newsletter, because they tasted so good lots of people requested this (thanks to Elizabeth, Norma and Deirdre).

labatNext came the competitions – croquet on Ted’s manicured lawn…. Great attention to detail (like Monsieur Magrez’s chateau) to create a lawn worthy of this mighty game. Liz started off slowly and after warming up, out-croqueted a lot of us. The petanque teams were getting very competitive as well. There was a gazebo for shade and those that wanted to cheer on their team. Deirdre and Chris have played this before and their underarm boules got mighty close, and they ended up winning by a tight margin. We all had a go at most ball games including ping pong.

Upstairs, some enjoyed Wimbledon – cheering on Murray. Sadly Murray fought hard later in the week to be beaten by Federer. Then out came the teapot, blue willow china and biscuits. Jenny and Ted had thought of everything!
