Letter From the president – September 2021

Gosh September is here again already, I swear that it was September only a month or two ago, or so it seems!  How the months seem to be flying by or is it just my imagination?  I hope that many of you have been able to visit or have your families visit you here this summer.Gary and I have been fortunate enough to see both of our sons and their families, it had been such a long time, lots of cuddles, kisses, hugs and laughter and much splashing in the pool.   The end of this month heralds the arrival of Autumn, the harvest moon (a full moon) this year falls between 20th – 22nd September.

The term harvest moon refers to the full bright moon that occurs closest to the start of autumn equinox and dates from before we had electricity when farmers depended on the moonlight to gather in their crops late into the night (a useful piece of information for any of our keen fruit and vegetable growers just in case there’s a power cut or you forgot to pay the electricity bill).

The name September comes from the old roman word for seven, septem, (no not septum, that’s the piece of cartilage between your nostrils!), now we all know that September is the ninth month of year.  September used to be the seventh month of the year until the advent of the Gregorian calendar.  There is the interesting trivia, a free anatomy lesson and now for some fun facts, three fete days that happen in September are Grandparents day, drink-a-beer day and cheese pizza day.  So, a great month for those who might be beer drinking, cheesy pizza eating grandparents!!

We have a full diary of events and activities in September, the paella party hosted by Linda and Charles Waldren.  A guided tour at the Musee des Beaux Arts for an exhibition of paintings by British Artists followed by lunch and a tour of the cathedral.  Alain’s walk and talk at ‘Cenon Heights’ returning to Bordeaux by boat.  A visit to the wine cave and lunch at Rauzan followed by a visit to nearby Sauve Majeure.  Not to forget our monthly book club and bi-monthly quiz evening which are via a zoom link.

In the meantime, my very best wishes to you and families and hope to see you soon.
