Friday September 27th 2019: Histoire et Bonne Chère à Cadillac

Come and celebrate autumn with a visit to Cadillac

Tour of the old bastide town and walls, followed by lunch and visit to the Château including Exhibition “HENRI IV un roi dans l’Histoire”.

We’ll have coffee and a walk round the bastide which has kept its walls, gates, square plan, narrow alleys and gardens, covered market with the Château and town hall above and an old church.

Then we’ll have lunch at Le Cosmopolitan , a picturesque restaurant inside the bastide.

The Château

The major attraction at Cadillac is its stately Château. This 17th century building has a collection of stunning mantelpieces and fine tapestries. Until September 29th , it is housing an exhibition of period portraits and statues on loan from Versailles, centering on ‘Le Bon Roi Henri, King Henri IV of France (1589-1610).

Both the house and exhibition are well-worth a visit. As there are notice boards and the Henri IV exhibition has panels in French and English, it will not be a guided tour.

Alain Mounolou will be there to supply explanations. Alain plans to send participants a short advance file via e-mail covering the major facts and a printed version will be handed out on the spot.

When, where and how?

Meet between 10.30 and 11.00 a.m. on the market square at Cadillac.

Canoe Trip : Thursday September 5th : Salles to Biganos Port

Updated: Canoe Trip and Picnic: Thursday, 5th September: Salles to Biganos Port

Many members may remember a canoe excursion three years ago, especially those who got wet ! We plan an all day trip, covering 20km from Salles to Biganos port, with lunch half way near Mios. Not so much paddling is required as the flow of the river, plus the ebb tide carries us most of the way, through lovely scenery and nature, especially birds.

We shall meet at the lovely small leisure port of Biganos at 10am (sorry about the early start, we have to catch the tide !). There we leave our cars and board a minibus which takes us to Salles. After a safety and canoeing briefing there, and after packing our picnics in waterproof cylindrical containers, we set off downstream to our riverside picnic near Mios. We should be back at our cars by 5pm.

Directions from Bordeaux
  • Take A63 towards Bayonne, then exit at junction 22, onto A660 towards Arcachon.
  • Take exit 2 direction Biganos,
  • Continue north on D3 through Biganos, straight over the first two roundabouts, under the railway, straight over the next two roundabouts, bear right at the following one (direction Audenge).
  • Shortly before the Pompiers, you will see a church on the right. Take the left turn opposite, signed to the Port.
  • Allow 35 minutes from the Rocade.
  • Address : Rue du Port, 33380 Biganos.
  • Map: Please click here

What to wear

You may get wet ! Bring a change of clothes, be prepared with sun and insect protection. Shorts are advised, as well as old trainers or secure sandals. A retaining cord for your glasses is strongly advised.

Don’t forget your picnic, but note this will be with you in the canoe in a 55 litre waterproof container, with a 30cm dia lid, please ensure your picnic can fit in !

The price is 18€ pp, including the canoe, paddles and safety gear hire, as well as the minibus trip.

The price for children aged 6-12 is 6€, they will travel in the centre of the canoe (without a paddle). Well behaved dogs may also use this place for free!
