Guided Hermitage Park Walk to Lormont - Tuesday, 29th October 2019

Guided Walk through Hermitage Park to Lormont – Tuesday, 29th October

We shall have a walk, guided by Alain, to discover this historic area followed by lunch in Lormont.

We meet at the Tram A station Buttiniére at 11.00 hrs.

We start with a 3 km guided walk through the green hilly Iris and ‘Herimitage’ Parks (walking shoes needed) to the old town of Lormont where lunch will be served at the restaurant ‘De la Belle Rose’ around 13h.

During the walk, here are sweeping views from on high over the Garonne to Bordeaux and beyond.

After lunch there is a short walk for a visit to the St Martin Church.

Return can be made by retracing our steps or via the Batcub river shuttle boat.

Location and History

Lormont is a now a scenic suburb of Bordeaux on the right bank of the Garonne river. The name means Laurel Hill and comes from old days when this wood was sacred to the Gauls.

Lormont is known for its attractive view of the Garonne and Bordeaux and its charming little old centre with the Church of St, Martin, founded 778 by Charlemagne, and Chateau de Lormont where Eleanor of Aquataine stayed and the Black Prince’s ill-fated son Richard II was born. The railway which arrived in the mid 1880’s still runs overhead and the Pont d’Aquitaine spans the river in close proximity.

Meeting Time and Location

We shall meet at the Tram Ligne A station Buttiniére at 11.00 hrs. La Buttiniére does have a relay car-tram car park but it is very popular and likely to be full by mid-morning, so we strongly recommend arriving by tram.

Lunch

Lunch will be served at Restaurant de la Belle Rose in the old town of Lormont around 13:00. We each pay separately.

The restaurant was founded in 1890. The railway which arrived in the mid 1880’s still runs overhead and the Pont d’Aquitaine spans the river in close proximity.

Return to Bordeaux

Return can be made by retracing our steps or via a leisurely cruise on the Batcub river bus which stops on the way back at Quai des Chartrons, Quinconces and Place Stalingrad to connect with the tram. Highly recommended if you have not travelled on the Batcub previously.

Booking

Please book direct with Ian C whose contact details are here and also in the Membership Directory

Friday September 27th 2019: Histoire et Bonne Chère à Cadillac

Come and celebrate autumn with a visit to Cadillac

Tour of the old bastide town and walls, followed by lunch and visit to the Château including Exhibition “HENRI IV un roi dans l’Histoire”.

We’ll have coffee and a walk round the bastide which has kept its walls, gates, square plan, narrow alleys and gardens, covered market with the Château and town hall above and an old church.

Then we’ll have lunch at Le Cosmopolitan , a picturesque restaurant inside the bastide.

The Château

The major attraction at Cadillac is its stately Château. This 17th century building has a collection of stunning mantelpieces and fine tapestries. Until September 29th , it is housing an exhibition of period portraits and statues on loan from Versailles, centering on ‘Le Bon Roi Henri, King Henri IV of France (1589-1610).

Both the house and exhibition are well-worth a visit. As there are notice boards and the Henri IV exhibition has panels in French and English, it will not be a guided tour.

Alain Mounolou will be there to supply explanations. Alain plans to send participants a short advance file via e-mail covering the major facts and a printed version will be handed out on the spot.

When, where and how?

Meet between 10.30 and 11.00 a.m. on the market square at Cadillac.

Visit starts at 11.00. Lunch 12.30. Château visit at 15.00, visiting time around 1 hour and a half, at will.

Directions

From Arcachon/Biscarrosse:   Leave A 63 at exit 24 to Saucats, then La Brède where you join RN 113, turn right to Castres-Gironde and on to Podensac

From Bordeaux/Le Médoc:   Follow the rocade and exit onto the Toulouse motorway A 62 (exit 19), leave at exit 1.1 (in fact the 2nd exit) ‘La Brède’, ‘Langon’ (green sign) and turn left, drive to Podensac and beyond. If you miss exit 1.1, drive down to exit 2, follow ‘Podensac’ signs, when you reach RN 113 in the village, turn right towards ‘Cérons’. At the roundabout turn left towards Béguey and Cadillac.

Once over the bridge turn right to Cadillac, right again at the entrance of the town there’s a big car park to your right in front of the walls.

Lunch and Prices

Le Cosmopolitan, which is at the end of a street off the main square, will provide a 3-course lunch with choice of main course and wine (1 bottle for 5) 22€

Château visit will cost 6€.

Origins

Some years ago, a new member of the BBC suggested having a golf day for all the ‘golf mad’ resident Brits  eager to be let loose on the fairways of ‘La Belle France’.  The first event took place rather discreetly at Biscarrosse where some half a dozen ‘hackers’ left dozens of balls in the woods claiming they would come back and find them another time! This was the inauspicious beginning of the BBC golf society.

Where do we play?

Since then, the BBC has graced several clubs in the South West with its presence: Cameyrac, Gujan, Lacanau, Arcachon, Le Pian, Langon and Biscarrosse are regular venues.

Non-players and friends

On each occasion, we include a clubhouse lunch and extend our welcome to non-players, friends and ‘groupies’ who enjoy a walk in glorious surroundings to follow the games.  The lunch also provides an excellent excuse for bad golf from our golf fanatics who complain of lack of concentration, timing, indigestion, drowsiness- anything to justify their pathetic afternoon efforts!

We cater for all tastes

You might be forgiven for thinking that we only play ‘social golf ‘.  However, we aim to cater for all tastes: young or old, high or low handicaps, single players or couples, with the accent on enjoying a healthy outdoor activity, convivial company and superb countryside in and around the Gironde.

Ability

Games are usually organised to suit playing ability.  Beginners are encouraged to have professional instruction first and visits to a driving range before venturing on to the golf course.  We try to help newcomers understand the rules and etiquette so that they enjoy the experience even more.

It was particularly encouraging to note the progress of two couples who first came to a BBC golf day ‘just for the lunch’. They gradually took up golf, had plenty of practice and some lessons.  They can now more than hold their own on the links!
