Activities Week: Marans (near La Rochelle) - 2nd to 9th June 2018

Update: 7 apartments are now booked but there is room for one or two more couples. If you want to come, please book direct with Ted and Jenny as soon as possible but by the end of January at the latest !

Park and Suites

This year Ted and Jenny are proposing a week at Marans, a small town about 20 minutes north-east of La Rochelle and near the Marais Poitevin.

We will be staying at Park & Suites:  Parks and Suites at Marans-la- Rochelle

Details of the Marais Poitevin regional nature resereve are here: www.marais-poitevin.com/

Park and Suites is a complex of groups of two storey apartments set in a park.  You reach the top floor apartments by an outside staircase.  Each apartment has a bedroom with large double bed leading to a shower room and on to a kitchen/dining area with large fridge, dishwasher, hob and microwave (no oven) with a sofa bed, table and chairs.  Outside there is a small balcony or patio.  In the case of the downstairs apartments the patios are covered.  The apartment is well equipped and the bed made up.

Outside for your use a large heated pool, sauna, ping pong and a boules court.

There are several blocks of apartments with large spaces in between which makes it feel very spacious.  A few minutes walk brings you into the little town where you will find shops, a small marina, bars restaurants. There is also a Super U easily accessible.

Excursions and relaxation

We are planning excursions to the Marais Poitevin, visits to ruined abbeys, chateaux, walks along the coast and of course La Rochelle and Ile de Re.  There is an opportunity to play golf at Pree la Rochelle.  There is certainly a lot to do in the area, but maybe you would just like to relax around the pool and not join in the activities.  That’s OK too!

Price and Payment

The price of all this is 49€ per couple per night, 343€ for the week.  They will require 50% on booking then the rest before arrival.  There is a reasonable cancellation policy.  Cheques must be made out to Park and Suites and sent to Brian M as soon as possible.  Please note that this type of activity is not covered by the BBC insurance policy. Hence the booking and all payments are made direct between the attendees and Park and Suites .

Anyone interested should email Ted and Jenny. We do need to have time to organise numbers and bookings, so we must operate on first come first served basis.

Reminder - Libourne Bastide Guided Tour and Lunch - Saturday 8th April

REMINDER – We have a block booking for this event and there are some places still available for an informative and very relaxing day in Libourne with lunch. Please either book direct with Susan O or online below.

Libourne is a town with a unique history and stunning beauty. A must to visit in the heart of the Bordeaux wines. The history of the town goes back to the thirteenth century and King Henry III.

Libourne is situated at the confluence of two rivers, the Isle and the Dordogne, and is almost 100km from the Atlantic. It had the great advantage of being the first port on the Dordogne river accessible for merchant ships inbound from the Atlantic. Similarly a great advantage for outbound shipping trading overseas.

The unique location considerably helped Libourne to grow its prosperity, particularly in the development of a flourishing trade in wine, making Libourne into a very prosperous town.

Program for the day

10.30 – Meet at the Office de Tourisme du Libournais, 42 Place Abel Surchamp, 33500 Libourne for our guided tour of the bastide area.

The tour will entail mostly a gentle guided walk round the old town. There are cafes and benches nearby in the Place Abel Surchamp and along the river front if anyone prefers to take a break. There is an underground car park in Place Abel Surchamp.

12.00 approx – Lunch in Restaurant La Tour du Vieux Port, 5 mins walk from Place Abel Surchamp.

After lunch you are free to do as you please.

Visit the Musée des Beaux-Arts or enjoy a spot of shopping in Rue Gambetta off Place Abel Surchamp.

Nearby

Less than a 20 minute drive to Perpignan, former capital of the Kings of Majorca and the Counts of Roussillon. Perpignan changed hands repeatedly during the medieval period until it finally became French territory with the Treaty of the Pyrenees of 1659. Too far from the coast to become a port, the town developed into a cloth-making centre by the early middle ages. Perpignan’s Top 5 are:

  • Palais des Rois de Majorque. The number one sight in Perpignan has been the focus of the town’s success and growth over the centuries. Originally used as a king’s residence during the twelfth to fourteenth centuries, today it’s really only the gardens and the courtyard of this imposing citadel that are worth a visit.
  • Saint-Jean quarter. For an idea of Perpignan’s prosperous past take a wander through the network of narrow lanes in this district and take in the splendour of the fourteen and fifteenth century mansions and stately homes which make up this atmospheric part of the town.
  • Cathédrale Saint-Jean. Functioning as Perpignan’s cathedral since 1602, the exterior walls of this  imposing structure are particularly noteworthy: layers of stones from the local river bed have been squeezed in-between the brick.
  • Jardin de Sant-Vicens. These gardens on Rue Sant Vicens are not only full of exotic orange trees and Oleanders, but they’re also the place to look for ceramic pots and textiles which are on sale here.

Agenda
  • Arrive Monday 25th September and depart Friday 29th September (ie Four nights)
  • Seven rooms with private bathrooms are available (five double rooms and two suites)

Piet de Bie Memorial Walk - Wednesday 8th February

About 25 of us assembled for a ‘light’ breakfast in the woods near Soussans in the Medoc on the anniversary of Piet’s birthday. Later, we all enjoyed a good lunch together with many reminiscences and a toast to the memory of Piet.  Thanks to Elizabeth for the excellent organisation including the weather!

Suitably fortified from breakfast, we did manage to fit in a lovely walk in the sun along the forest tracks which included climbing over a large recently fallen tree and slip sliding down the steep sides of a very muddy ditch which caught out at least one of our group!

We all unanimously agreed to repeat the occasion next year as the second Annual Piet de Bie Memorial Walk
