Celebrate this Leap Year with us, enjoying a delicious lunch at the well recommended Café du Port.
The restaurant has a lovely ambience and is located on the waters edge near to the Pont Pierre on the opposite side of the river from the city of Bordeaux.
The nearest tram stop is Line A – Place Stalingrad followed by a c200 metre walk to the restaurant keeping the river on your right. Please click here for a map.
There is some parking at the restaurant but we very strongly recommend that you travel by tram so as not to be disappointed when you arrive and find the parking is full!
Some Leap Year Traditions
According to an old Irish legend or possibly history, St Brigid struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men every four years.
12 Pairs of Gloves
In some places, Leap Day has been known as “Bachelors’ Day”. A man was expected to pay a penalty, such as a gown or money, if he refused a marriage proposal from a woman on Leap Day. In many European countries, especially in the upper classes of society, tradition dictates that any man who refuses a woman’s proposal on 29th February has to buy her 12 pairs of gloves. The intention is that the woman can wear the gloves to hide the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring. During the middle ages there were laws governing this tradition.
The price of the menu is 25€ which includes one bottle of red or white or rosé wine to be shared between four diners.
