Guided Walk through Hermitage Park to Lormont – Tuesday, 29th October
We shall have a walk, guided by Alain, to discover this historic area followed by lunch in Lormont.
We meet at the Tram A station Buttiniére at 11.00 hrs.
We start with a 3 km guided walk through the green hilly Iris and ‘Herimitage’ Parks (walking shoes needed) to the old town of Lormont where lunch will be served at the restaurant ‘De la Belle Rose’ around 13h.
During the walk, here are sweeping views from on high over the Garonne to Bordeaux and beyond.
After lunch there is a short walk for a visit to the St Martin Church.
Return can be made by retracing our steps or via the Batcub river shuttle boat.
Location and History
Lormont is a now a scenic suburb of Bordeaux on the right bank of the Garonne river. The name means Laurel Hill and comes from old days when this wood was sacred to the Gauls.
Lormont is known for its attractive view of the Garonne and Bordeaux and its charming little old centre with the Church of St, Martin, founded 778 by Charlemagne, and Chateau de Lormont where Eleanor of Aquataine stayed and the Black Prince’s ill-fated son Richard II was born. The railway which arrived in the mid 1880’s still runs overhead and the Pont d’Aquitaine spans the river in close proximity.
Meeting Time and Location
We shall meet at the Tram Ligne A station Buttiniére at 11.00 hrs. La Buttiniére does have a relay car-tram car park but it is very popular and likely to be full by mid-morning, so we strongly recommend arriving by tram.
Lunch will be served at Restaurant de la Belle Rose in the old town of Lormont around 13:00. We each pay separately.
The restaurant was founded in 1890. The railway which arrived in the mid 1880’s still runs overhead and the Pont d’Aquitaine spans the river in close proximity.
Return to Bordeaux
Return can be made by retracing our steps or via a leisurely cruise on the Batcub river bus which stops on the way back at Quai des Chartrons, Quinconces and Place Stalingrad to connect with the tram. Highly recommended if you have not travelled on the Batcub previously.
